Comparing yourself with others is not a wise investment.

  1. Compare ourselves with ourselves: If we compare who we were 5 years back and who we are today, we will find a considerable difference. What we valued long ago and what we value today may vary. In fact, if we become diligent in improving ourselves, every day gives us invaluable opportunities to become better. Rather than expecting others to acknowledge our progress, if we acknowledge our progress day by day, no matter how small it is, it will fuel our enthusiasm to do more and grow more. Like how athletes grow by breaking their own timelines, we should also aim to become better than what we were in the past.
  1. Compare to ‘Gain values than valuables’: We often see what people have or possess externally and hardly care about what kind of a person he/she has become in the process of acquiring those things. It is wise to learn about what values and virtues the person has cultivated in himself/herself in the process. We need not achieve what others have achieved, but we need to cultivate the values and virtues that can enable us to achieve that which can give us happiness and satisfaction.
  1. Compare to ‘Get inspiration & give respect’: When we observe the very high working standards of extremely successful people in the profession we have just begun to work, we might feel inferior in comparison to them to the extent that it might become very overwhelming and we begin to feel, “Oh! I can never become like them, even if I work for my whole life”.. Well, we are not here to get overwhelmed by anyone or anything; we are here to respect their greatness and draw inspiration from them to move ahead in our journey by taking simple and small steps based on our capacity. We don’t know where and when they began, but we can have faith that if we follow the path that they have followed, we may reach that standard someday in the future.
  1. Compare to ‘Feel grateful & show compassion’: Statistics show that, “If your basic needs are covered, you are richer than 75% of the rest of the world.” If we talk about remaining things like skills and abilities, then we might find ourselves to be far more successful than the millions of those who never had any access to learning them. When we compare ourselves with those who are less fortunate than us, we must feel grateful for whatever we have. Also, we must show compassion to those who are less empowered than us by helping them in whatever way we can.

Before we reach a level where others can truly appreciate our uniqueness, we may not be able to avoid the phases of comparative criticism.  Therefore, we need to accept, as early as possible, that we may not be able to teach or train the world outside to stop comparing us with others or to see the only good side of us and encourage us to do what we are good at, but we can reduce the unworthy comparisons that we do, and make the necessary changes in our perspectives to devote all our energies in elevating our life.

Thank you.
